Heavy Duty Brake Drum

All brakes may be defined as mechanical devices that stop or retard the motion of the vehicles by friction. During this process the energy of motion, changed into heat energy, must be absorbed and dissipated by the brake.

The medium and heavy commercial vehicles have bigger mass than cars, which leads to an increase in the kinetic energy. Great forces are required to stop a truck especially from high speed. As the size and weight of road vehicles increase, the force exerted by the driver’s foot becomes insufficient and needs the help of compressed air as a medium for energy supply and as a transmission device.

An air brake is a type of friction brake for vehicles in which compressed air pressing on a piston is used to apply the pressure to the brake pad needed to stop the vehicle.

Featured Fact

"Are considered the superior braking system for heavy commercial vehicles, such as trucks, buses and trailers".

Due to their reliability they are considered the superior braking system for heavy commercial vehicles, such as trucks, buses and trailers, specially for those with a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,000 to 33,000 pounds or more, which would over load hydraulic brakes. Air compressed brake have several advantages, one of them being the unlimited supply of air, so the brake system can never run out of its operating fluid and minor leaks do not result in brake failures.

Most types of truck air brakes are drum brakes, which are brakes that use friction caused by a set of shoes or pads that press outward against the inner surface of a rotating cylinder-shaped part called a brake drum.

Drum brake components include, a brake drum, shoes, wheel cylinder, springs, pins and the backing plate (also called the “Torque Plate” because it absorbs the torque from the braking action). In addition, the backing plate provides a base for the other components, increases the rigidity of whole set-up, supports the housing, and protects it from foreign materials like dust and other road debris. Since all braking operations exert pressure on the backing plate, it must be strong and wear-resistant.

Drums should be stored in an area free from excess moisture and properly stacked to ensure
an uniform distribution of weight, avoiding distortion of the sidewalls or damage to the braking surface of the drum.

The proper selection of the brake drum is key to maintaining optimum Brake System performance.
