Brake linings<\/strong>, also called brake pads<\/strong>, are the consumable surfaces in brake systems<\/strong>, such as drum brakes and disc brakes used in vehicles, and are considered a critical component<\/strong>, as they are the material which comes in contact with the rotors in order to slow them down without wearing them out too quickly.<\/p>

They are curved thin strips composed of a relatively soft but tough and heat-resistant material like asbestos (it used to be the element most commonly used for brake linings<\/strong>, but the dust created by asbestos is harmful when inhaled), minerals, fine wire, etc. with a high and ideally identical coefficients of dynamic and static friction. These linings are riveted or bonded<\/strong> using high-temperature adhesives to a solid metal backing such as a brake band or shoe<\/strong> to create the friction necessary for braking, while protecting the rotor from coming into direct contact with the metal backing. Linings<\/strong> prevent them from wearing out quickly and needing frequent replacing, however, linings<\/strong> made from harder materials can cause accelerated wear and tear on the rotors or drums<\/strong>, and therefore it is important to check the quality and the suitability<\/strong> of the material with relation to the specifics of the system.<\/p>

The material used for brake lining<\/strong> purposes usually has a high coefficient of friction and as it comes in contact with the rotors, creates enough friction allowing vehicles to slow them down relatively quickly. The kinetic energy of the braking process is turned into heat energy. Brake linings, like brake bands and brake blocks<\/strong>, need to be made from more durable materials which are able to endure high levels of heat and pressure.<\/p>

Brake linings will need to be replaced periodically<\/strong> as the material will inevitably be affected by wear and tear over time. Often the brakes will squeak or become less smooth as the lining wears out, this is important to pay attention to as worn out brake linings<\/strong> can cause greater, and more expensive, engine damage. A rivet<\/strong> is a permanent mechanical fastener. Before being installed, a rivet<\/strong> consists of a smooth cylindrical shaft with a head on one end. The end opposite to the head is called the tail. On installation, the rivet<\/strong> is placed in a punched or drilled hole, and the tail is upset, or bucked (i.e., deformed), so that it expands to about 1.5 times the original shaft diameter, holding the rivet in place. In other words, the pounding or pulling creates a new “head” on the other end by smashing the “tail” material flatter, resulting in a rivet that is roughly a dumbbell shape<\/strong>. To distinguish between the two ends of the rivet, the original head is called the factory head<\/strong> and the deformed end is called the shop head or buck-tail<\/strong>.<\/p>

Brake lining rivets are used to secure brake shoe linings<\/strong> on cars, trucks, and other vehicles. They have flat, chamfered, countersunk heads to provide as smooth a surface as possible once installed. They are a heavy duty alternative to bonding<\/strong> in high load applications such-as truck brakes<\/strong> so that the lining<\/strong> maintains its position relative to the brake share during useful life of the lining. Another benefit of rivets<\/strong> versus bonding alternatives is that the brake shoe may be rebuilt<\/strong> by removing the rivets\/sacrificial friction materials and replacing\/re-riveting.<\/p>
